Griffin Preserve Committee Minutes 8/20/09
Griffin Family Nature Preserve
Meeting Minutes from August 20, 2009
Present at the Meeting:
Joan Brill, Tom and Greg from Townsend Chemical, Pat Casey, Bob Griffin, Stiney Vonderhaar, Jim Bothe and Jim Owens
Topics Discussed:
  • Reviewed meeting minutes from July 16th
Steven Brill submitted various potential Eagle projects. All projects were well received with the one that would enhance both entrances receiving unanimous approval. Stiney suggested that Steven utilize some of the Cunningham bricks in his design.
Tom and Greg from Townsend Chemical (referred by Dan Matheson) gave a presentation on the wildflower meadow. Opening statement was that our 2-acre meadow was a large project. They suggested we try to establish warm season (prairie) grasses before planting wildflowers and then plant defined wildflowers in smaller sections using a drill seeder rather than a slit seeder. Herbicides would be required this fall, next spring and somewhat continually for cold season grasses (fescue) and weeds. They are to provide pricing and further information to Bo. Honeysuckle problem was addressed suggesting herbicide spray August September time frame and recognizing a 3 to 4 year period before plants would deteriorate on their own.
  • October 24th volunteer day to include Horncastle entrance, trail maintenance, trash pickup, cattail removal, tree debris removal, stump removal, plant a couple trees, and grass seeding. Plan to have refreshments (donuts, pizza, and beverages).
Bo to get prices for trail gravel and trail blacktop (wildflower trail only).

Action Items:
  • Spray wildflower field and honeysuckle.
  • On site inspection of the old building.
  • Continue planning volunteer workday for October 24th.
